Doubles court on a 34 x 16 m recreational slab. Dimensions to the outside edge of the lines.

How big should the slab be?

The slab has to be bigger than the playing area so players can run back for a lob and across for a wide ball. We build three standard sizes, and you can enter your own in the designer.

Building more than one court? The designer handles rows and grids of up to eight courts, with fencing between them.

Surface, fencing and lighting

Tennis courts are commonly finished in multi-layer acrylic or in synthetic grass. Perimeter fencing is typically 3 m high, often stepped down to 1 m between courts so players can see across. Lights go on poles along the long sides near the service lines. Try all of this in the Court Designer and see the result in 3D.

Marking this court out? Our line marking cheat sheet gives every line dimensioned centre of line to centre of line, ready for the tape machine.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a tennis court?

A full-size doubles tennis court is 23.77 m long by 10.97 m wide. The singles court is 8.23 m wide. These measurements are taken to the outside edge of the lines, so the lines are part of the court.

How much space do I need for a tennis court?

The playing area is 23.77 x 10.97 m, but you also need run-off space around it. We build recreational courts on a 34 x 16 m slab, ITF recommended courts on 36.6 x 18.3 m, and stadium courts on 40.2 x 20.1 m. Fencing, lighting and drainage fall are in addition to the slab.

How wide are tennis court lines?

Under the ITF rules, lines are between 25 mm and 50 mm wide, except the baselines, which may be up to 100 mm wide. The centre service line and centre mark are 50 mm. Most courts are marked with 50 mm lines.

How far is the service line from the net?

The service line is 6.40 m from the net, measured to the outside edge of the line.

How high is a tennis net?

The net is 0.914 m high at the centre and 1.07 m high at the posts.
